How HoneyQuote Works
Most sites that offer to shop your insurance are shopping something else: you. HoneyQuote is a licensed insurance agency. You get real quotes from our own rating engine, a licensed agent checks the coverage before you buy, and the carrier pays us a commission only if you do. You pay us nothing, and your information never gets sold. Here is exactly how that works, including how we get paid.

What HoneyQuote Is, and What It Isn't
HoneyQuote is a full service agency with real licensed agents, and our agents work directly for you, not for the insurers.
We are not an insurance company
We don't write the policy and we don't pay the claim. The carrier does. What we do is find the right one and handle the paperwork.
We are not a lead generator
Your quote request goes to one agency, ours. We do not sell it, share it, or resell it to other agents weeks later.
We are not a comparison site that hands you off
You don't get bounced to a carrier's website to start over. You can buy the policy here, and a person stays with the file.
How it Works, Step by Step
1. You tell us about your home
It starts with your address. Our system pulls what it can about the property so you aren't typing in your roof year and square footage from memory, and we ask you for the rest.
2. We quote real rates, not estimates
HoneyQuote uses its own rating engine to calculate actual rates from the carriers we're appointed with, in seconds. They are real quotes with no hidden fees, not ballpark ranges that change when someone calls you back. We are appointed with 20+ carriers writing in coastal markets.
3. A licensed agent reviews it before you buy
A person looks at the coverage, not just the price. Wind, water, and flood are three different things in a policy, and a named-storm deductible is not the deductible you'd pay for a kitchen fire. If the cheapest quote leaves a hole in your coverage, we can tell you before you buy it.
4. You buy online, and we keep the file
You can complete everything online. After that, we handle servicing your policy for it's lifetime.
How HoneyQuote Makes Money
We earn a commission from the insurance carrier when you buy a policy through us. That is the whole model, and it is why HoneyQuote is free to use.
It is in our interest to find you the best fit
Renewal commission is the reason we would rather place you correctly than quickly. HoneyQuote wants you to find the cheapest and most comprehensive coverage available to you: we are in the business of support and satisfaction.
Does Our Commission Change What We Recommend?
Honest answer: commission rates are not identical across every carrier we work with. Any agency that tells you otherwise is either not paying attention or not telling you the truth.
So here is what we do about it. Quotes are presented by price and by fit, not by what we earn. Our agents' pay does not change based on which carrier you choose. And if a lower-commission carrier is the right policy for your house, that is the one you'll see at the top.
What You Actually Pay
Quotes are free. Advice is free. You are never charged for asking.
We Don't Sell Your Information. Here's What That's Worth.
This is the part of the business most sites won't explain, so we will.
A lot of "compare insurance" forms are lead generation. You fill one out, and your details are auctioned in real time to three to five different agencies, each paying roughly $10 to $50 for you. That is why the phone starts ringing before you've closed the tab, and why the same records get resold months later as aged data and the calls start again.
$10 to $50 is what your information is worth to a lead seller. We have never sold it, at any price.
When you request a quote from HoneyQuote, your details go to carriers for exactly one reason, which is generating your quotes. They do not go to other agencies, to lead buyers, or to marketers. One licensed agent sees your file. Nobody calls you because you read an article. Read our privacy policy.
Why One agent Instead of Five
The shop-and-blast model is not just annoying, it is a worse way to buy insurance. Five agents racing to reach you first are competing on speed, not on getting your wind mitigation credits right. Nobody owns the file, so nobody is accountable for it at renewal.
One agent works differently. The same person who quoted your house handles your renewal and is the person you can call when you have a claim. They already know your roof year, your deductible, and why you chose the policy you chose. That only works if the agency is paid to keep you, which is exactly how commission works and exactly how selling leads does not.
What We Can't Do
Every comparison has a boundary. Here is ours.
- We quote the carriers we are appointed with, not every carrier.
- Some insurers only sell direct. If a company doesn't work with agents, it won't show up in your results here, no matter how you search.
- Availability varies by county, roof age, construction, and more. Coastal eligibility rules change often, and a carrier writing in your county last quarter may not be writing this one.
- If we can't beat what you have, we'll say so. Keeping your current policy is sometimes the right answer, and telling you that costs us a sale and keeps you as someone who trusts us.
Questions People Ask
Is HoneyQuote a lead generator?
No. We are a licensed insurance agency. One agent handles your quote from start to finish, and your request is not sold to anyone else.
Do I pay HoneyQuote anything?
No. Quotes are free and we charge no agency fee. You pay your premium to the carrier and nothing to us.
Is it cheaper to buy directly from the carrier?
No. Our rates match the carrier's direct rates.
Will I get spam calls?
No. One agent contacts you about your quote. Nobody else has your number, because nobody else was given it.
Does HoneyQuote sell or share my personal information?
No. We share your details with insurance carriers for one purpose: generating your quotes. That's it. Selling customer data is how free comparison sites make money, it's not how we do.
